The throbbing heart of Brazil must surely be Salvador. It marches to the beat of a different drum, a sound that neither of us had ever experienced before.

Simply put, the entire population of this amazing city descended from slaves brought over from Africa. On the surface alot seems the same, as most places in BRA but not far beaneath the surface its true soul can be found. We found this place quite awesome, from the boutique beaches and intoxicating nightlife to the kulture (coming at ya). Salvador kicks arse and must be visited at least once in your life.

Salvador kicks arse

Ahem, that said, Salvador is also a spectacularly dodgy place - hmm guess that's half the fun. So peligroso in fact that we never once took the camera out of our room (nor more than $50 US at a time, jewellry or anything of value!). On the Tuesday street festival night we made friends with some locals who we befriended to scare off the other locals, street kids and their bags of tricks, one of which involved a razor blade and the mention of Aids. Yep pretty shocking stuff, but in retrospect, more bark than bite. Pickpocketers, watch thieves and fellow travellers dodgy Salvador stories all made the place eerily unfortgetable.
