Floating Mazes
From First Week In England in Venice, Italy on Aug 10 '06
Who doesn't want to go to Venice? Of course we liked it!
It was as beautiful as the pictures look and the canals really do exsist!! The place is ridiculously crowded and possibly one of the most touristic places we have been on this entire trip. Luckily Venice has the natrural situation they find themelves in which seems to counter they're strong dependence on tourism. The city is very beautiful since all the buildings are fairly well kept up and the people are as friendly as ever.
The hotel we stayed at was a pretty big dump. It was about 30 minutes to get into town from the hotel but it really wasn't that bad of a trip. The worst part was waking up every morning with new bug bites and more cob webs right about us on the ceiling. Kind of a downside. We also have now met up with Josh. He arrived for our first night in Venice so we had a crazy night of pizza and a 10pm lights out. The next day we went to downtown Venice and cheked out the bell tower in San Marco Square which had a beautiful view of the entire island city. We even managed to time it so that the bells went off when we were up there, which really weren't as loud as we thought. And I don't know how many people now have a bell ringing for around a minute on their camcorder, stupid people. I have come to loath and despise the use of the camcorder over hear since no one uses it in any interesting way. But thats their gig I guess.
Anyways, so we wandered around the town a bit more and then went back to the hotel so that we could prepare for Shawn's birthday. We attempted to make some nachos for him but since they don't have them over here and cheese doesn't really come grated and salsa is hard to come by, they were the worst nachos ever! So we went downtown grabbed some food and then went on a pub crawl. Well it being Monday night, we didn't have more than 5 people on the entire crawl so we never ended up paying for it and still got all the deals, so it worked out quite well.
The next day we took slow, for no particular reason, and ended up heading into town for the nighttime scene. Venice is beautiful at night since it has lights in every imaginable spot. Lots of pictures were taken and then we had a pretty solid meal in on the water overlooking the other islands.
There was lots to see and do in Venice, and really we just did a lot of walking around. That was the great thing about Venice, you can walk around and just admire the buildings and scenery. You don't have have to go into all the museums and buildings. Although we did go into the Bascillica which was the most amazing building I have seen so far. Just incredible design and preserved art from the past inside. We also managed to go over to the island where they make glass, but I can't rememeber the name of it right now. It was a fairly big bust though since it was all stores and we couldn't find a gallery where they make it in sight of the public.
All in all Venice was amazing and I think we would all go back, but not for longer then a few days, since it isn't the biggest place.
