Vienna - Salzburg. Day 8

in Vienna – we slept in, and checked out late. We walked out to a cold day with more rain and caught a train to Salzburg Austria. We changed our plans at the last minute – we were going to make a stopover in Melk, but given the rain and the cold, decided on a straight shot to Salzburg.

The train is nice – were lucky enough to find our own compartment, just like the Hogwarts Express. The ride is smooth and the train is clean. The train did stop a few times on the way tpo Salzbur, and we met a nice gentleman who chatted with us in German and Spanish – he was Austrian but had a son who live in Barcelona. He made a point of mentioning Arnold Schwarznegger and we talked a bit of the United States, he had visited California. The views from the train were very nice, we enjoyed the countryside and looking at the houses. We were going to Melk but at the last minute we decided to go straight to Salzburg because it was very cold and raining.

After arriving in Salzburg we found it was cold and rainy. We got to the hotel Sheraton Salzburg – a very nice hotel, five stars large, tub, duo shower heads, king size bed and a nice large window we could open when the room got stuffy from the shower.

We were hungry and tired, but most things closed at dinnertime and it was after 7PM. So the hotel concierge recommended a pub called Die Weiss – excellent food, and it was lively and warm inside. Kind of reminded me of a Bennigan’s but with far superior food. The service staff all wore local outfits. We had weiner schnitzel which came with salad, potato soup, beef broth and noodles, a piece of veal sausage that came in a bowl of hot water, and some bread – altogether it was about 26 euros – not cheap, but we were filled and warmed and the waiter was super nice despite our not being able to speak German.
