Battle of Hastings
From Mr Messy in Battle, United Kingdom on Aug 16 '08
We visited Stone Henge after a short drive from Mere. It isn't as big as I'd expected but still pretty impressive. Some of the rocks have fallen over the years but enough remain standing that you can see the original size and shape of the rings. There are actually 2 rings one inside the other and nobody knows why but they seem to think it was some kind of calendar or astrological or religious reason for building it in the first place. The workmanship is amazing. The horizontal stones sitting on top are all tounge and grooved on the ends to add strength and a rebate chisseled into them for a type of pin on the vertical stone to fit into. Amazing for the tools available at that time. Now that that box was ticked we went to the town of Brighton. That famous seaside resort that has nothing at all going for it. It's a dirty, grubby looking place where the traffic is even worse than normal and the parking 10 times as bad. To top it off the beach is large stones, not even as good as gravel, and crowded with tacky kids rides and amusments. We did not stay long at all before heading to Battle which is a town built on the site of the battle of Hastings in 1066. William the conquerer was a Norman and he defeated King Harold who was the English King at the time. The battle lasted all day before King Harold was shot in the eye by an arrow and the English defeated. William was crowned King and ordered that Battle Abbey be built on the battle ground and the alter is the exact place King Harold was killed. After the Abbey was built the town of Battle grew arouind it. Its about the only thing I remember from history at school so I found it interesting even if you don't.
