Lums Pond State Park, Delaware
From George & Karen's Eastern Seaboard in Eight Weeks ( April 18 - June 16) 2008 in Bear, United States on Apr 17 '08
We orginally were going to try to make it to Killens Pond State Park, Felton in the middle of Delaware because we had never camped there before but after thinking about the long drive in our camper we decided to stay at Lums Pond State Park in Northern Delaware. We have stayed at Lums Pond many times over the years as our first and last stop heading from Rhode Island down south and then returning. Arrived at Lums Pond State Park in northern Delaware around

Well we got up at 3 in the morning and were on the road by 3:30 and headed over to CT to take I395 down to I95 in New London. It was smooth sailing until we went through New Haven where we had to stop because of an accident and this held us up for at least 30 minutes or more. Once we were on the road again the traffic was not bad going through NYC but again this was around 6AM and actually after the GW Bridge we were on the Jersey Turnpike which is the cheapest place to get gas - we made very good time. Even though we stopped once on the CT turnpike for a gas and pit stop and twice on the Jersey turnpike for the same thing –it was the most relaxing drive we have ever had driving on the turnpike. The traffic was moving really well and at a relaxed pace and the day was beautiful. The weather was cold when we left Rhode Island but when we got to the campground in northern Delaware at 10:30 in the morning it was hot. It took us about seven hours to get here with three stops and not going over 65 miles per hour.
Over the years we have stopped at Lums Pond State Park on the way down south and on the way back. It was actually only 298 miles getting here going by the GW Bridge vs going the Garden State Parkway which is the way we have gone with the kids. This will be the sixth time we have camped here but the last time we were here was in 1994 and things have changed. They have added more sites and 8 sites now have electricity (which we got one but it was a good thing we made a reservation). This campground has sites all around like the number 8 and it is a great place to ride bikes very level. Trees that just had been planted are now full grown and it was so peaceful and beautiful when we drove in. There were only about 5 sites taken at the time but all through the afternoon campers kept coming in and most of the sites were booked for the weekend. The showers had the hottest water ever! Steph was going to join us here but they denied her day from the Naval Hospital the day before we left so George was really bummed out since he has not seen her since Xmas. I miss her too but we had a ton of stuff that she was going to take and we were counting on the room now we have to lug it all around until we see in June 13th. Oh well that’s what happens when you have kids!
This campground is on Lums Pond which had a swimming beach that you could drive around too. Now, you can still fish, boat etc but can not swim because the state can not afford lifeguards and the pond has a high bacteria count. Even so the pond is beautiful and there is a fishing dock. George and I walked out on the dock and we were the only ones there – we could hear the birds and we saw other animals like three baby turtles on a log and one large turtle on a big log floating around the pond. The pond is huge with a picnic area across from the campground and a boat dock where you can rent boats of all types. It was so peaceful and the campsites are a good size with trees but a lot of wide open meadows which our kids use to play in and our little next door neighbor Abby would have a ball playing here! This is a great place to ride bikes and George and I did and also remembered Brad and Justine riding their bikes for hours chasing each other! One trip Ken and Marybeth were camping with us and their two daughters Jess and Becky also liked to ride their bikes all around. Great day, beautiful hot, hot, hot weather, peaceful and George’s blood pressure has really dropped being in such a relaxing place.
