The 11.5 hr flight from Madrid to Buenos Aires was good in terms of food but bad in terms of entertainment. I completely got why Marcela, a Chilean friend, had once told me the Argentines are obsessed with wanting to be English as 2 of the 3 films shown were filmed in Britain – ‘Starter for 10’ and ‘Seeker’. Too many Virgin flights of late have spoilt me with a vast array of films to choose to watch when I want to.

We arrived around 1am, our luggage soon afterwards thankfully and we paid a fixed fare of 78 pesos to our boutique hotel in Palermo, a buzzy elegant tree lined area of BA. It certainly was alive, even at that time, and we were alerted by beeping horns to a travelling stag do. The groom was tied to the back of a pick up wearing nowt but a blonde wig, gold loin cloth and balloons.

Hotel BoBo was all it promised to be in the department of swank and we flopped into bed after what was nearly 24 hrs travel door to door. Breakfast was a good choice with hot and cold items included in the room rate but some special items to order available for a price. We got a taxi for less than 20 pesos to the domestic airport. We discovered we were on the El Calafate flight via Ushuaia. After checking our bags we whiled away the one hour delay by walking along the promenade watching the local fishermen catch plastic bags.

We looked rather odd in the heat carrying around my big red puffa coat and this was pointed out by a young Swiss guy who chatted with us for a bit. He had left his hostel this morning and spontaneously decided to head to Iguazu. And there’s us with our 7 months booking ahead of all our hotels. At the domestic airport once you’re through the security check the café with the best selection is the one to the left.
