A really deep hole

Arrived in Flagstaff, AZ at like 6am after an overnight train trip from LA. It was fine but I didn't realise how cold the aircon was so I didn't sleep as well as I might have. Flagstaff is a lovely little student town, but so so cold. There was a lot of snow on the ground on our way in. I went out for early morning coffee with an English girl I met on the train. It was a really cute organic/vegan/Baha'i place. Anyway I ended up getting to know Flagstaff pretty well because by tour to the Canyon was late...

When it did arrive it was worth the wait. We drove through the Painted Desert, stark and beautiful, and the location of many Westerns. We stopped at the Cameron Trading Post which is in the Navajo Nation, bought souvenirs (of course.)
So the Grand Canyon itself was really breathtaking. I really should have organised myself to spend some more time there and get down into the Canyon. But it does all add up. We stopped at a number of different viewpoints and I took a lot of photos (including photos of squirrels, as predicted by Tracy T!)

The South Rim was really crowded but the other spots were better. It's hard to describe, it's not just the depth and width of the thing, it's the colours and textures... it's great.
Headed back to Flagstaff, to wait again for the train which was like 2 hours late. Back to LA Union Station to wait for my train to Palm Springs...
