Ypres and The Menin Gate
From Northern France and Belgium in Ieper, Belgium on Jul 29 '07
We dropped the car off in Calais and then it was back onto trains for us. Now, after driving around the country in a car, you really do realize that trains aren't as awesome as you may think. Although we were on a TGV (high speed train) so that helped things out a little bit.
Once we finally got to Ypres, it was about 7:20 and the ceremony at the gate starts at 8:00 every night. We walked down thought the down and got to the gate at about 7:40 snagged a spot to watch and waited. The ceremony and the gate are really mind blowing. Just the number of names all over the walls is something you wouldn't believe unless you saw it. After the ceremony we wandered to the little cemetery they had nearby it was all so peaceful that it was impossible to imagine the destruction and death during the First World War.
Finally we had our fill of war memorials and we were back on the train for Brussels and a nice warm bed.
