We thought we were going to Londonderry but the signs all said Derry. In the 1600s they brought Londoners to Derry to settle there and take control of the city from the Irish after one of thier wars. The Londoners built a wall around the city and changed the name to Londonderry. Now if your catholic or from south Ireland you call it Derry but if you are a protestant you call it Londonderry so even the locals don't know its name.

We arrived at about 10 AM and found the normal central mall area but it was deserted. There was us a dog and a couple of homeless people. Shops with shutters down and we began to think we were making a mistake by being there but we found tourist information and were told it would get better which it did.We did a walking tour of the city and also a bus tour which were both really good. The walking tour followed the top of the city walls which untill only 3 years ago wern't accessible because gates were installed during the 70s to keep people apart. Those gates were kept locked for 30 odd years apart from speciall government approved marches. It's only a few years since the army has left and the people are slowly getting back to what we take for granted, just able to move around with no checkpoints or searches. Our guide was a man who'd lived all his life there and gave us a feel for what the old ways were like and also a real sense of hope for a peacefull future by the locals. I don't know how they stayed through the 70s and 80s.
