After spending a week in luxury, though sad to see my parents leave, Kendra and I were both happy and somewhat relieved to return to backpacking and staying in hostels where people aren´t afraid to make eye contact and everyone is not a fat, rich, lazy tourist.  We hopped on a bus to Merida with our backpacks feeling double their previous weight thanks to the wine, tequilla, granola, pancake mix, etc. etc. etc. that my parents left us with.  Merida was a refreshing return to seeing some real Mexican culture.

The streets and main square of Merida were filled with live music on Saturday night and we strolled around looking at local handicrafts, listening to music, and both enjoying a group of drummers and a very spirited interpretive dancer.  We were told that Sunda was the last day of a fair in a nearby village, so we made our way there the next day in a bus crowded with locals.  We feasted on fried churros and plantains, corn served in a styrofoam cup with mayonaise, chilli sauce, lime, and cheese, which became a new favorite of ours.
