WOW, WOW, OH MY GOD!!! There truly aren't many words to be able to describe the feeling of going down the side of a mountain on a bike for over four hours!!! This was definitely one of the most exciting things we have done in our entire trip. We had heard about it from other people, but nothing quite prepares you for it! The entire experience was great, but what added to it was that we got to see a completely different side of Bolivia. We had only been in very high altitudes and dry areas up until this ride.In Coroico we got to see tropical Bolivia, and it is astounding!

Ok, so this is the famous death road... the road to Coroico starts on a summit near La Paz, 4633 meters above sea level, and heads down to 1700 meters above sea level (A 3300 meters descent). Not only is the road extremely steep, but it is also narrow, muddy, and has steep drops of over 1000 meters. It is legendary for its extreme danger and in 1995 the Inter-American Development Bank christened it as the "world's most dangerous road". One estimate is that 200-300 travelers were killed yearly along the road. The rain and fog can make visibility almost nonexistent. On July 24 1983, a bus veered off the road and into a canyon, killing more than 100 passengers in what is said to be Bolivia's worst road accident. One of the local road rules specifies that the downhill driver never has the right of way and must move to the outer edge of the road, this was when the accidents would occur. This road is no longer open for vehicles to drive through it because new road has been built that is much safer and easier to drive on. The danger of the road ironically made it a popular tourist destination starting in the 1990s. It is an awesome 64km stretch of adrenaline-filled bike riding!
