First Night in Kentucky
From Gauchos Go West in Lexington, United States on Aug 10 '07
The first day, we crossed Virginia and were happy to leave behind the coldness and homogeniousity of the metropolitan Washington, DC area. We did not see any Starbucks for fragments of about 25 miles. Taking the 66 to the West was a bit different than we were expecting because all of a sudden, camouflaged within the cars and the enormous SUVs of happy mothers and proud road tyrants, we could watch a parade of armed Hummers and other instruments of murder. The radio was playing Beyonce.
After a while, the landscape began to change drastically. Green was definitely the dominant color entering West Virginia. We have to confess that our excitement was growing and we were pleased to see railways which paralleled the highway, and trains carrying coal. We crossed cute little towns, coal miners’ villages, and no Macys. In a few hours, we left WV behind.
Kentucky exceeded our expectations. The scenery was beautiful from the beginning till the end; Santi baptized it the "Gauss State" for the road going continuously up and down forming bells along the way. Although true to a certain extent, the bell-thing did not deny the fact that - for what we saw - one can't mention Kentucky without making reference to the equine.
