Jimbaran Bay, Bali: Romantic Dining Right on the Beach, Romantically Including Glow in the Dark Sales People
From Bali, Indonesia: Both the Most Beautiful and Most Annoying Place We've Travelled to Yet in Jimbaran, Indonesia on May 25 '06

After our tour around the hindu temple our driver recommended a place for dinner ("Very romantic", he promised us over and over). He drove us to Jimbaran Bay, which is known for it's beachfront dining. The restaurant he took us to was run by a good friend of his, and he told us that he would convince his friend to give us a discount (which he did, 15% off). It was a seafood restaurant, not my (Michael's) favourite type, but Heather enjoyed being able to select the snapper that would become her meal. We were shown to our seats, which easily beats any sidewalk al fresco dining we've ever done. Looking down the beach, there's restaurants and tables as far as the eye can see. You're literally meters away from the waters edge. This provides both the nice sounds and views of the crashing waves. The food (both my chicken and Heather's fish) was very delicious, as was most of the food we ate in Bali.

To add to the setting, there were roving bands of musicians who would visit (unsolicited I might add) right to your table. We watched and listened to them at other peoples tables and were quite impressed. We wondered if they would come over to our table. Sure enough, they did:

"Where you from my friend?"
"Canada"
"Oh Canada" (I thought he was going to start singing our national anthem), "Bryan Adams".
And so we dined while they played and sang Bryan Adams' "We're in Heaven" right in front of us. They followed up with "Come Together" by the Beatles. After they were done they just stood there and smiled, palms outstretched.
We were also interested to see all the guys who would just pace back and forth along the waters edge trying to sell their little glow in the dark toys (it reminded us of trying to sell the same things back in Perth on Australia Day). They would just stare at you while they played with their glowing yo yo's and (how tacky can you get?) glow in the dark earrings. This was to be our first exposure to the overly persistant Balinese sales people. We were to meet plenty more before our week was over.
