Tacos in the Capital
From Journey to Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico on Jun 24 '07
After returning from Valle de Bravo, I called up Sarah, and met her for walk in the Condesa. She describes the neighborhood as belonging to the alternative yuppies ("alternice"). I saw an an organic store, and we stopped in a cafe for coffee. I learned that she is a nutritionist by training and that she had worked for the Mexican futbol team and now is marketing her own product. Diet in a box. See www.dietinabox.com.mx. It is essentially a way of counting calories so that one can reduce or maintain one's weight. She told me how she has struggled to sell her product, but I believe she just needs time before the product reaches its tipping point. She is also planning to sell her product in America, and she answers her own 1 800 number. The beauty of owning your own business.
She introduced me to her friend, Paul, who runs a shutlle service called Bamba Experienc. (www.backpackingmexico.com) It is a van service from the capital that goes south. At first, I didn't want to forgo taking public transportation, and I like the freedom of picking my own itinerary. However, this would be a comfortable ride. It wasn't a tour. It just picked you up and dropped you off at a place to stay, one that would pick. In addition, it had some cool stops on the way including a cacti forest. So I signed up to leave on Wednesday.
Not exactly cheap tacos
The next day, I checked out the Antropology Museum which is remarkable. It has great stellae from the Mayans, artifacts from the Aztecs, and columns from Teotihuacan. In the afternoon, we headed to the Zocalo. We stopped by the museo de bellas artes because it is exhibiting a Frida Kahlo exhibit with photos, artwork, and letters. In the evening, we stopped for tacos at El Califa. Not exactly cheap, but definitely great tacos.
