We were allowed to go up to the top of the lighthouse and take in the view. The main cathedral is in the background sticking up in the trees.

Colonia was founded by the Portuguese at the mouth of the Rio de Plata (River of Silver) as a jumping off point to smuggle goods in and out of Buenos Aires.  (3 hour ferry ride away)  The Spanish got ticked off and founded Montevideo to help extend their control.  That pretty much stopped the growth of Colonia and as a result the town has stayed relatively small and the original colonial section wasn´t flattened and built over.  The streets are cobblestone, the buildings are small, and the whole deal is pretty quaint.  We rented a couple of bikes and peddled around and somehow managed to take very few pictures.  The longer we travel the fewer times the camera comes out of the pocket I am afraid...

A drum group getting ready for Carnaval. They started drumming their way down the street at about 10PM. Uruguay has a great late-night tendency!

Anyway, cute place and probably worth a night if you are taking the ferry from Buenos Aires anyway.
