Windy Tarifa

Tarifa is the most southerly part of Spain, and mainland Europe I believe – only 15kms from Africa (Tangier in Morocco) across the straights of Gibraltar and you can see it clearly on a good day.

It is also a windsurfing (and wind turbine) mecca, because its damn windy. Tarifa is a small town with lots of windsurfing, and particularly kite-surfing shops. We didn’t spend a long time in the town itself but it has a much younger vibe than most of spain at this time of year.

The same can be said for the campsites and once we found a good one, Rio Jara, we spent 5 nights there. Young people in campsites in winter are a rarity – we even saw someone else with kids!! The campsite is right on a nice big beach, but to get there you have to cross a muddy riverbed (or river if its raining) - Jay loved to run in the mud! The beach was pretty windy as you would expect, but nice when the sun was shining.

The reason we spent a long time here was because we were waiting for the start of our tour to Morocco. Originally we were planning to go across on our own but we lost our bottle when we got here… So we joined an organised tour of 3 weeks for an African adventure!

PS. Having returned to Tarifa and visited the old town within the walls I can report that it s very nice! Lots of quaint streets, cafes and bars and boutique type shops. Still bloody windy though!
