- Heo de Janeiro?
That's when I found out that if a word in Portuguese starts with an 'R' that 'R' is silent. And so I was able to inform the bus driver that I was indeed going to Heo.
Heo's roads were rubbish and the bus jarred it's way down the road towards Copacabana. I wasn't sure if the driver was hitting every pothole he could or just weaving to dodge the larger craters, either way, we hit a lot of holes.
It hadn't escaped my attention that only 2 weeks before, there had been riots in Heo and buses, police stations and the like had been set on fire. Getting a bus hadn't been my plan, but it worked, and I made it to Mellow Yellow hostel.
It's a weird place, no real common area and the rooms are a bit dirty. It's not bad, but not that great. Anyway, wandering around Heo insued and I was happy to find juice bars on nearly every corner and a wealth of random fruits not seen since Colombia. Here was my fixation for my time in Brazil.
Got to be honest, I didn't like Heo really. It's dirty, noisy and I never felt safe. Not sure why, just didn't like the place too much. The suggestions for interesting markets were rubbish too, except for the good hammock deals at the (spelling) Norestiana market.
Beach was good though. As were Brazilian bikinis, although not always what they were stretched around.
All you can eat restaurants are dangerous. Especially meat-based ones. Churasqueria's are found all over the shop in South America and the one we went to in Heo was good! They just kept bringing that lovely BBQ'd meat. They did insist on bringing the chicken hearts too, which were horrible. Anyway, 90 minutes of solid eating makes you feel very fat.
