A Night in Milan

The train arrived in Milan at about 11:30 pm on Wednesday night. We were delayed about half an hour at the border as the border guards came on the train and took some guy off. He didn't seem too happy about it. I was blown away at the potential beauty of the train station. It was absolutely enormous, made of stone and had carvings and sculptures all over the place. The problem was that it was being renovated and there was scaffolding and other construction eye-sores all around.

We left the train station in search of a bus to take us to our hostel and I was blown away by the garbage and trash all over the place. It was a huge culture shock, I felt like I had stepped into the middle of a ghetto. There was graffiti everywhere and groups of people standing around doing nothing in particular.

Trying to figure out the bus was fun enough. First we had to find the stop for the bus, then when the bus arrived we couldn't get on because we had to buy tickets somewhere else. I'm pretty sure the driver didn't want to deal with 15 foreigners trying to buy tickets and he was just trying to get rid of us.

After an exciting bus ride through Milan we arrived at our Hostel. All I could focus on was the garbage and graffiti EVERYWHERE. With that in mind I had made the decision that Milan must be one of the worst cities in the world.

The hostel room was nice and cozy, nothing too exciting there. I'm getting used to sleeping in a beds that are at least a couple inches too short. We woke up early in the morning hoping to see some of the sights. We ended up wandering around for a while and not seeing much of anything. It was very disappointing. We even missed out on the Milan Cathedral, or Il Duomo di Milano. Only the second largest cathedral in Italy behind St. Peter's Basiclica. I'll have to go back there sometime to see the Cathedral.
