Cabo San Lucas
From Cabo April 22-28 2006 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Apr 21 '06
AIRPORT:
The San Jose airport is very small. You get off the airplane on roll out stair cases. Like an old 1950’s movie. There are 3 rooms in the airport. The first one you give your paperwork and passports to a customs person. The second room is where you get your luggage. In this room are also the car rental people. The Avis guy could not have been nicer. You grab your luggage and go through security. The third room is where some time share people are. Not a huge problem. Avis shuttle is right outside to the left.
DRIVE:
We were told it was a 25 minute ride to the Pacifica. It was really like a 45 minute drive. Going through Cabo San Lucas I got a little lost. I followed Boulevard Marina instead of staying on highway 1 / Lazaro Cardenas. A quick flip around and was back on track. When you get to the Sunset Beach sign, turn, you take that. The road to Sunset Beach / Pacifica is beautiful. Cobblestone drive from the hills down to the beach. Beautiful views. You also go through about 4 gates. Each one checking you name and room number. So you feel very safe.
Pacifica:
When we arrived the bellman grabbed our luggage, and we went to check in. There was no one around except for employees. (Actually most of the time not many people around. In the hotel, Downtown, etc…). The guy checking us in was very nice. Our room was ready when we got there. Around 12:30 PM. We asked if we could be sure to get the best room. He said we could wait 2 hours and get a nicer room. I had to give him my credit card to check in. And had a $20 underneath. When he grabbed it, I fanned out the 20. I said we would appreciate anything he could do. He said a group was checking out the next day and he would give us the best room in the hotel. So we took the ready room for this day. Our room was very nice. I think it was room number 1211(something like that). On the second floor on the West side. The rooms are a little small. But the room was filled with first class furniture. All dark wood. Very nice. The views are amazing.
SATURDAY NIGHT:
It was dark out when we were ready for dinner. I was a little apprehensive of going to Cabo in the dark (because I got a little lost). So we drove over to the Sunset Beach for dinner. It was very cold Saturday night. One thing we noticed was that the Sunset Beach / Pacifica is about 10-15 degrees cooler than downtown Cabo. Maybe because of the winds. The Sunset Beach was pretty empty. We arrived at around 8 or 8:30. I believe we went to the Bistro. It was OK dinner. I think about 30 bucks. And we had the 10% Pacifica discount. We sat on the deck. Not much to see at night. But could hear the waves. Only about 3 tables taken in the restaurant. We had coffee after dinner there. Most of the coffee in Cabo is pretty bad.
SUNDAY:
We decided that we were going to lounge by the pool. First we went to see our “buddy” at the front desk. He said to pack up and go to the pool. Our new room would be 1444. We were EXCITED! Lounged by the pool all day. Ate at the pool. Sandwich, quesadillas and ice tea. Quesadillas came with pico and guacamole. Very good. About 25 bucks. We got our new room. No suite like we hoped. But 2 more floors up. On the east side. Very nice. Since we only paid $160 for the room we though the extra 20 was no big deal. We went to eat dinner at La Golondrina. Ok food. We had ice tea. No sickness with water or ice there. We parked at the City Club next door. We split chicken mole. Very big portions. So I suggest everyone split a meal. We had a nice conversation with the tables around us. There might have been 5 tables taken in the place at around 8:30 to 9:30 ish. An older couple came in. And some guy got up and wanted to have his picture taken with him. They talked about Tennessee Titans and Tennessee volunteers’ football. When we got home I looked up Bud Adams, owner of the NFL's Tennessee Titans. It might have been him.
MONDAY:
We went to the grocery store along Lazaro Cardenas with the parking lot. We walked to the Crazy lobster. Got there about 12:10. We were the only ones in the place. They wanted to serve us breakfast. We said Lobster special. And joking around pointed to the sign. The special was very good. Enough to fill us up. We don’t eat huge meals. Maybe my second favorite meal in Cabo. We then went to Santa Maria Beach. It is quite far. Long drive. The beach is pretty rocky. And the water was a bit cold. Not sure if I would recommend it or not. If you do not have a swim able beach and want to go to one, I would say go for it. If you’re in Cabo to relax. Maybe pass. For dinner we wet to O Mole Mio. Best meal we had. Hands down. Again, the only people in the restaurant. I am not sure about the waiter. If he tried joking with us or not. When I asked “Donde esta el bano” he replied, something like “encima de las escaleras a la derecha”. Maybe trying to pull one on us “Americanos”. Which I said “Oh up the stairs to the right”. He was quite stunned. Ha-ha. To be honest I just caught Stairs and Right. From my HS Spanish days. Again we had ice tea. We are not big drinkers. Ice, water. No sickness.
TUESDAY:
We decided to see the Sunset Beach during the day. We were going to drive over. But the van was right out in front, when we were leaving. So we took it over. All the PB resorts have very good/convenient van service between them. It was quite busy at the SB. To our surprise. Since we had not seen many people anywhere. They have a small grocery store. Some clothing shops. Internet access room, etc… my girlfriend said it looked like Disneyland. We took the elevator down and you need to take a cart to the main pool. You have to take the carts everywhere. Which I said. Yea Disneyland. The pool is very crowded. And very tight. The Pacifica is very spread out. People running around. Partying. They had coolers and bags of chips out. More of a frat house. We did notice that the lounge chairs were made of tubing and mesh. Where the Pacifica were very sturdy, nice dark brown. With big white cushions. We ate lunch there. My girlfriend has a shrimp salad. She said was her second favorite meal. I had chicken Quesadillas. Again about 25 bucks, with the 10% discount. We waited for the cart to take us back up. It was maybe a half hour wait. We spent the time talking to another group of people. They had a timeshare there. They had never been to the Pacifica. We explained how SB is like Disneyland. And Pacifica is like the Bellagio. The next day we saw them by our pool. And they agreed with that comparison. We took the van back to the Pacifica. The driver remembered us. And he looked familiar. We had a bag with some water. He stared poking around it, asking for a beer. Then went on to tell us that he was a big drinker. Beer, tequila, whiskey. For dinner we decided to do a tourist thing. We ate at Margaritavilla. I had the chicken Fajitas. Pretty good. My girlfriend had a Shrimp Cocktail. It looked a little rubbery and scary to me. The place was pretty empty at night. Maybe 2 tables on the first floor. The inside was all empty. And the top deck was about half filled. We went over to Ruth Chris for desert and some good coffee. The people at RC could not have been nicer. I spoke to the manager. Asking about the lack of people around. He said it was after spring break. And before the Americans get their tax refunds. Which it picks up then.
WENDSDAY:
We lounged by the pool for our last day. For dinner we ate at the Stop Light. We met some crazy Americans that had moved down there. Very fun. The restaurant was very empty. Maybe 3 tables taken in the restaurant. The manager stopped by a few times. Very nice guy. At night we could hear footsteps in the room above. The only time we could hear neighbors.
THURSDAY:
We packed up and headed for the airport. Finding the Avis return was a little hard. I might suggest people rent from thrifty right by the gates. Might be easer. The lines were pretty short to check the baggage. And right upstairs to the United terminal. I have posted my photo’s to a webshots.com site. If I could have just attached them all to this posting, I would have. But oh well. http://community.webshots.com/user/GregD001 My camera got a memory error half way through. I had to get a disposable camera. When those get developed I will also post those photos. Overall we had a great time. We would stay at the Pacifica again. If anyone has any questions about the Pacifica. I can try and answer.
