Relaxing in Lake Como
From Three months away in Como, Italy on Jun 03 '08
My departure for Lago di Como was a bit delayed. Because the train strike was 24 hours and went till 9pm on Sunday night, I couldn't actually get out of Florence until Monday morning. Ah, the beauty of the Italian train strike. But it worked out. I had one last day of hanging out with my friends and then was off for Lago di Como on Monday morning. And I knew I would love Como the moment I stepped out of the train station and walked right smack dab into a giant sculpture of hands. Lake Como and I were meant to be.
So I was not suprised when, within hours of arriving, George found me wandering alone in the rain and told me that I did things to his heart! Well, okay, so maybe it wasn't exactly George per se, but more like some non-descript French man in Como for his holiday. And maybe I'm not completely sure what he said, because he spoke only French and Italian and could have said either that I did things to his heart or that I gave him heartburn. But the story sounds so much better my way...so I am going to go with that. Its my blog.
In truth, my time in Como was Clooney-free. Sorry to disappoint. Lago di Como, however, was beautiful...or at least it was beautiful the one day it didn't rain. Luckily, that was the day I picked to cruise the lake on the public ferries. Its about 2 hours by ferry up the lake to Bellagio, where I wandered for awhile enjoying the sun and the views. Then a quick 15 minute ferry hop to Varenna, a very quaint, teeny lake-side village. Then back to Como by the ferry again.
It was, in a nutshell, gorgeous! And if you exclude my ill-fated hike through the woods up a hill in the rain wearing only flip flops to see the "spectacular views" from a mountaintop lighthouse (which, because of the rain, turned out to afford only spectacular viewa of fog, fog and more fog) it was very relaxing.
