I havent quit yet!
From I havent quit yet! in Quito, Ecuador on Sep 08 '05
Its Friday and I just finished two weeks of Spanish. I cant beleieve I made it this far. The more Spanish I learn the easier it gets. Okay, so thats obvious.
Annas sister just got back from vacation and I finally got to meet her. I found out that Anna thinks I remind her of her sister and I think thats why we get a long so well. They are very close and she lives two blocks away. Her sister is definately the wild one. What exactly does that say about me? Her sister and husband own the company Anna works for. Its a family business. So Anna wants me to go out for tea with her and her sister on Wednesday night. I have a lot of homework but I go anyway. (Im paying them right) Well, the tea had whiskey in it. It looked like tea though. Since I dont drink whiskey I had a beer. We had a great time and lots of girl talk. No you dont get details! I never did my homework. I tried but I couldnt concentrate.
I survived two weeks!
Thursday night I was promised no homework because its salsa night. After salsa class (Bettina you better catch up) two of the girls that are also students (they are law school grads from Holand) and I went out to dinner. It was the first time I really got to know anyone outside the school. I have been so busy with the family. We spoke English the whole time but we compared notes on instructors and clases. I havent been able to compare my progress with anyone. They arent getting homework and they only do four hours a day. But I think its easier for them because everyone at the school already knows at least 2 or 3 languages. Most students are from Germany. They told me they have to make up stories with their instructor to practice speaking Spanish. I have never done that. They were surprised and asked me how we talk. I said I always have a story when I show up in the morning. It could be Anna and her family, my Mom who is now writing Spanish to me and I never knew she wrote Spanish, my Grandmother who is calling and writing in Spanish, my friends who are writing me in Spanish, my friend who put me in touch with a friend in Quito. (Meredith) The list goes on. What does this mean, maybe I talk to much? I always have questions about the locals, the way of life, etc. Anyway, they were really cool and we had a good time. Anna and her sister came to the salsa club. Our salsa instructor took turns dancing with the woman and we danced with the locals too. These guys can dance! Its awesome! We had a great time!
Friday my instructor and I went to the Panicillo. Its an Angle that is on a mountain that overlooks the city. (they say the angel is watching over Quito) It was a beautiful morning and I got some great pictures. This weekend I plan on sleeping, going to a new park to exercise. Merediths friend in Quito told me about this park. Its suposed to be huge and you can hike, run, walk, etc. Its got hills and lots of trees. It sounds beautiful. So Im going to check it out. Im on a mission to find a pool. Again Merediths friend (another triathlete) is going to give me info. on a pool so I can swim. Biking will have to wait until I get home. One day I want to see a movie in spanish with English subtitles. Thats the way it was recommended by my instructor. I have been waiting to learn enought to understand at least part of the movie.
I am at a new internet cafe. My third I think. This one is hight tech, flat screen TVs and inexpensive. So far the best. I hope everyone is doing well.
Chao!
