i arrived in kigali yesterday afternoon and got settled in to a reasonable guest house ($30/night... note i only paid $8/night in Arusha including breakfast). i am finding it a bit more difficult here because the primary language is french, then a local language, with english a distant last. also i am having trouble finding other travellers ( i am starting to think i am the only one in town).
Overall the people here are friendly and quite helpful, but they do tend to stare at me a lot which is a bit unnerving. On the opposite side of the coin all the small children run up to me and want to shake my hand and say welcome. Kigali is a fairly cosmopolitan city with nice roads, modern vehicle in good condition, and modern facilities. Rwandans lifestyle appears to be more affluent than Tanzania. I have learned how to get around town using the local motorcycle taxis. kigali has thousands of motorcycle taxis (with complimentary helmet) which zoom in and out of traffic. Clearly they are exempt from the few traffic laws that there are here. i've been across town a few times on the bikes and am yet to see a traffic light, or even a stop sign.
