Totally Chilled!
From Bula Baby!!! in Nananu-i-Ra Island, Fiji on Jul 28 '06
This is a tiny island with no roads and no villages! Just accommadation, beaches and sun! Although we expected to be put into the dorm, we were pleasantly surprised...We settled into our 2 bedroom cottage at MacDonalds and soaked up the afternoon sun. Originally we were going to stay for a night as there was no 'self contained' option with our room. However. we managed to sweet talk the owner and were able to use the kitchen facilities in the dorm.... so we booked ourselves in for 3 more nights- we just had to make the most of it all - our own toilet, own shower and 2 beds instead of 20!! Upon welcoming, we were told of the local ways. This incuded the use of the generator ( there is no electricity on the island)Which is off between 2pm -4pm and 10pm-7am. We had a kerosene lamp in our room for use after 10pm but nobody showed us how to use it! Just before dinner , we decided we should ask for instructions, just incase we were out after 10pm...No chance!! We were back in our room by 8pm, the 'bars' were closed and the other dozen people on the island were already in bed!
It was oh so easy to slip into the Fijian way and use the rest of our trip as a big holiday! We were in Fiji time!!
We had a kerosene lamp in our room for use after 10pm !!
We vegged successfully for the entire time on Nananu-i-ra! We wandered out to sunset poit one evening where Vicki came into contact with a cheese fruit (possibly one of the worst creations ever!) and spent 10 minutes jumping up and down trying to get a lemon off a tree whilst Jenn kept an eye out for the owner - needless to say we were unsuccessful! So you see....its far safer to sun bathe!
We spent very little money which we were very gtrateful! One day, one of the employees at Mcdonalds brought a coconut to munch on. Later that day, he brought us both a green cocnut -we drank the gorgeous water from thta one. Thn, thatevening, he brought us 2 more! These were a bit odd, they looked like normal coconuts on the outside but on the inside they looked like sponges. They were lovely, very sweet- although, due to Vicki's earlier encounter with the cheese fruit, absolutely everything taseted like a mature chedder to her!!
On the final day, we were meant to be getting a boat back to Voli-Voli at 12.30, in typical Fiji time thought, it didn't show up until 2!! Wejust didn't care thought. We returned to Voli-Voli that night and met up with a couple we had met in NZ.We had a great evening of mango daquaris and crab racing! We also met a Kiwi who was emigrating to .....TAUNTON?!??!?!? in a couple o days.
