Canberra, an artificial city, was built because of a dispute between Sydney and Melbourne over which was really the chief city of Australia. Canberra was then choosen as the capital to compromise the problem of deciding the location of the capital. The Aboriginal place name was adopted. Initially it caused some embarrasement when it was discovered that the word "canberra" refers to "woman's breasts"!
