Escaping the heat on Sljeme
From My European Adventure! in Zagreb, Croatia on Jul 04 '07
Up behind Zagreb is a hill/mountain called Medvednica of which the highest peak is called Sljeme (1033metres) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medvednica
The whole mountain is more or less a National Park where "Zagrepcani" go to escape the heat of Summer and spend time walking around the many tracks upward to any of the restaurant and cafes dotted along the way.
Cooling off on Sljeme
At the top of Sljeme is a telecommunications tower which can be seen from mostly anywhere in Zagreb, and at its base you can find some great little restaurants serving "homestyle" specialities albeit more expensive that you would find down below in town, but it is worth it.
We didnt walk up, somehow it didnt seem appealling to walk the 8kms from town, uphill, in 39C heat... we drove, overtaking hard-core cyclists who were struggling in the heat and uphill climb.
At the top we sat down and feasted on really well made Bean Soup with Sausage (grah s kobasicom) it was SO worth the wait. After lunch we headed off for a little walk to see the ski slopes http://www.skijanje.co.yu/Ski_Centri/Hrvatska/medvednica.htm and then off to a chapel built on the mountain back in the 1920s. http://www.sljeme.hr/index.php?s=stuff&pgno=4&l=en
It was a great day.. but at the end we had to re-enter the heatwave of Zagreb :-(
