Quite how a bread stick dipped in chocolate snack managed to get its own special day of the year I don't know, but...when stumped by a question like this, just shrug and say, "Well it is Korea.." Pepero, or Peppero or Bebbero are a popular snack at any time of the year, but the last few weeks have seen Pepero displays springing up all over town. Special edition large Peperos, Hello Kitty Peperos, "I love you" boxes of Peperos have been produced all for today, the 11th; the 11th day of the 11th month. Seeing as the number one (1) resembles a pepero stick it's a confectioners marketing dream opportunity to create Pepero Day. As a marketing ploy its very successful. Shops have had amazing displays, the kids have been talking about it all week and today were coming in to school with bags stuffed full of the things, and of course wanting sweets from us too. Your basic box of Pepero will set you back 450W (about 20p) but some presentation gift boxes were changing hands for up to 40,000W (£20). Some serious profit to made here. I admit I got my fair share of chocolate covered bread sticks too. The kids may demand them from us, but they also bring in plenty for us teachers too. Today became a bit of a free for-all as with all the chocolate to be eaten they weren't in much of a mood for study and once the sugar kicked in they were too hyperactive to sit still.
