After my month of hopping to place to place, I had to head back to Auckland for some vaccinations for Costa Rica. I hooked back up with a friend I had made while working at the lodge and we decided to do a roadtrip to the Coromandel Peninsula in between my jabs. We hired a car for 4 days, the first day we headed out to the Waitekere Ranges about half an hour out of Auckland. This was just a day trip and we saw some amazing sights that not many people bother with so clsoe to Auckland. We headed to karekare beach which was used in the film, 'The Piano, it was completely deserted and very wild. We also headed done to Piha beach which was stunning too. That evening we headed off to the All Blacks v France match at Eden Park.
Sunday we headed off on to our road trip. The Peninsula isn't far from Auckland and we did a rather gruelling walk the first day, that night we stopped at Cormoandel Town in a cosy little hostel to recover. Day 2 saw us heading to catherdral Cove, which is a really picturesque rock formation. Then it was time to go and dig our own hot pool at Hot Water Beach. A bit of a gimmick but good fun; at low tide, you take your spade and dig a whole on the beach which fills up with hot water from the springs underneath, neat!
Back to auckland as kate was off to Fiji. I have spent my last few days enjoying a rather random red wine night, catching up on my blog and getting my final jabs. Off to San Francisco tomorrow!!
