May 5, 1995 - Stopover on Rhodes
From Greece and Turkey 1995 in Rhodes, Greece on May 04 '95

Boy, did we get lost! O.K. We got off the ferry at about 8:30am. But, we were supposed to get up at 7:00 to do so. I was sharing a bunk and room with Gram. We were going by the time on my watch. I had set the digital clock for Greek time, but the glow-in-the-dark hands showed St.Louis time. At 3:00am in Greece, it was 7:00pm in St. Louis. Gram woke up at 3, looked at the hands on my watch, which showed 7:18, got up, took her shower, got dressed, put her makeup on, packed everything, put sunscreen on (by that time I was awake in my bed), and told me she was going to see how much time we had left. When she got back, she said, "It's only 3:30! Can y ou believe it? I got up, took my shower...." So, I went back to bed!
We got off on Rhodes. We were greeted by a hotel owner. Since we didn't have reservations, we went with him. He had a place where there was only one other person staying there. Very quiet. We took the round-a-bout way back from the Palace of the Grand Masters. Very round-a-bout.
At the Palace, we saw the renevated castle, done by the Italians when they occupied Rhodes during World War II. It's beautiful. Because the world, which was once full of mosaics, is now mosaic-less; all the mosaics (exaggerating, obviously) are at the Palace of the Grand Masters. The art wasn't as great as it was on the mainland, but still...
We next walked the Street of the Knights Templar. It's a pebble road that's 600 meters long and dates back to the Crusades.
Ever heard of the Colossal? One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World? It supposedly straddled the Mandrakai Harbor, where we visited next. It was supposedly so huge that one can't even imagine. There are now pedistools where the feet were in ancient times.
