my first ski trip
From australia in Mount Buller, Australia on Sep 08 '05
there was a huge storm on the mountain afew days before my arrival and part of the hotel i stayed in had it's roof blown away. it was still raining on the afternoon we arrived at the mountain, so after renting the ski gear we went back to the room for a nap. overslept (yup, pigs!) and when we went out to look for dinner at 9pm, the town was dead. we couldn't find a place that was still serving food at that time. we headed back to our hotel and begged the bar to re-opned the kitchen. think my charm (ahem!) worked and the kitchen whipped up a hot meal for us. phew!
next morning...raining still. but i went for my first lesson anyway. the rain had hardened the top layer of the snow so it was slippery. i was a hazard to others as i kept bumping into people. it got better after awhile tho'....when everyone had learnt to avoid me.
on last day finally some snow! i put on my gear eagerly and was already for my second lesson. i made a grand entrance too!...my snow-plow didn't work and i crashed into skis that were lined up outside the ski school. i wanted to dig a hole in the snow and bury myself in embarassment. somehow i still found the courage to hit the slopes. after 6 hours of practise, the kids were still zooming pass me.
on the bus back to melbourne, counting the number of bruises on my legs, my friend asked me how did i feel about first ski trip. i felt like a clumsy penguin most of the time...i've fallen off ski lift, slide-tackled many skiers, received more attention (embarassment actually) than i had bargained for but it was certainly memorable. love the new experience and i'm sure there be will more ski trips in future. :)
