US Memorial in The Netherlands
From US Memorial in The Netherlands in Margraten, Netherlands on Jan 19 '06
The first stop of the Day (out of three) was Margraten in the Netherlands. It was a memorial created for the fallen American soldiers of World War II. Apparently George W. was there last memorial day. It was very windy, and a little boring, but I was glad to snap a few photo ops. There are huge walls with over 9,000 names. I found one of interest "Eugene Beck." A little ironic I think. Then we went to take a few shots of the graves. It always amazes me to see how perfect the can lay all the grave stones. Anyway the land is apparently owned by the US. The kid that took us there, Daan, was very nice. He looked like he was 12 but said he was 23. He was really impressed with it, and it made me feel ungrateful when I didn't think it was that great. We also saw these boards which visually showed how the war was fought. It looked like a big risk game. Since there were hardly any trees in the cemetery, it was extremely cold and windy (but I'm sure there was no comparison to Russia with its -17 degree weather). Also while we were here, you could see the Netherland country side. It was very pretty with mist and fog all thrown in. But in the end, we were all ready to leave here early.
Once we were on the bus, everyone fell asleep like usual and we were off to our next destination of the day.
Apparently George W. was there last memorial day.
