Is there a major for beach bums?

Even though I am salty with ocean water, completely exhausted, and look somewhat like a lobster, I still feel compelled to write an entry about my weekend...

Saturday morning began around 8am. We boarded the bus and were off to our first destination outside of San Jose - a coffee plantation! Being the addict that I am, I was extremely excited to say the least. Most unfortunately a slight stomach ache prevented me from sampling any of the world-renowned java. I will let the pictures do the rest of the describing...

After the plantation we headed over to Poas Volcano. I was very sad to discover that fog covered the crater and made things almost impossible to see. We hiked around for about an hour through paved "jungle" paths (which were my favorite part)...overall, I was not all that impressed. Until we saw the waterfalls, that is...

The final part of our day consisted of a brutal (let's just say that I can't walk very well right now) hike through wet tropical forests. The waterfalls were absolutely breathtaking. Once again, make sure to check out the photos. They speak for themselves.

Today we were up and ready by 6am - not entirely sure how we managed it, but we made it happen. We made it to the boat dock in Puntarenas in a couple of hours, and then we were off to Isla Tortuga! I have never felt so spoiled in my entire life...the boat had servers who brought around plates of fresh fruit, there was a free juice bar, great music, and of course - plenty of places to lay down and tan (more like fry in my case). We arrived at the island (inhabited only by a handful of locals, mind you) around 11am and were ready to begin an incredible day. Around noon a conch (big shell horn) sounded which told us that lunch was ready. Dee-licious. After lunch the option for banana-boating and kayaking was open, but I decided to get some shade and take a nap. Life is rough.

All in all, the first excursions completely exceeded my expectations. Sadly tomorrow it is back to school...I have my first midterm this week! (Yes, we do actually have a lot of homework.)

Until next time, pura vida!

your website entry has peaked my interest. It sounds like you did all of this over a weekend? I am going to be in costa rica for about four days and I'm looking for an accessible place to have some beach time, but also get a bit of hiking in at the rainforest. Any words of advice or particular places that are easy to get to?
