We've arrived!
From My journey in Delhi Paharganj, India on Oct 30 '06
Well, Carma and I made it! We are safe in Delhi, I am so glad we are together. This already feels a little overwhelming, and thank goodness we have each other. We are not very fond of it here and look forward to getting out of Delhi. Let's see, the plane ride was fine. We had someone from the hotel waiting at the airport to pick us up, which was a treat. The way people drive here is absolutely insane! I thought Mexico was crazy driving, it is 3 times worse than Mexico! Cars, auto rickshaws (little taxis), motorcycles, bikes, cows, and pedestrians all share the steets, and there is no organization. The 'Hotel Relax' is kindof crummy and leaves much to be desired, but it will do. Thank goodness Carma brought us a small bottle of wine to enjoy on our first night, it certainly settled our nerves and took the edge off a little upon arrival and before bed. We had a bit of a crazy morning getting to the train station and booking tickets for a train tomorrow. Many people trying to trick tourists were outside the station trying to convince us to go other places to book tickets. One man was even yelling at us, trying to convince us that he worked there and we simply should not enter to get tickets there. So many people here are truly trying to cheat tourists, we must be very careful. It is a bummer to feel like we can not trust anyone. We went to the National Museum today, unusual for Carma and I to end up in a museum together, but we knew it would be peaceful, safe, and possibly an opportunity to meet other travelers. It was nice, beautiful artwork, amazing sculptures. We had an unsettling experience with our auto rickshaw driver. At first, it seemed like an okay enough idea to let him show us some sites. We could not get around to them all on our own and we did agree on a price upfront. But then it started to feel shady when he tried to take us to a rug shop and some mosque place we did not know we were going to. So we had him take us back to the hotel. The whole thing was a bit stressful, but we are back in our neighborhood now and all is fine. Tomorrow, we will head for Jaipur and then to Pushkar for the camel festival. I think we will appreciate the other places on our itinerary much more than Delhi! Thank you to those at home for commenting and emails. It feels good to be connected. Feel free to pass blog site address on to anyone else, I know I left out many email addresses.
