We had a great leaving do and loads of our friends turned up despite the pub being hard to find! Even we got lost and we booked it – doesn’t bode well for future navigational efforts! Thank you all our you who delighted in telling me about the “coldest Russian Winter ever” and that it would be too cold to even take my thermal underwear off to wash. I’m not put off – oh no. I’ve heard vodka is very warming. And I still have that plan to mix Berrocca with it so it’s a nutritionally sound meal!

We’re off on Wednesday morning to Ireland for a crazy round of relly visiting – Newry, Cork, Clonmel, Wexford and Dublin in 5 days. In a Corsa (don’t think it’s up to the job to be frank). Then sleeping at the salubrious Stansted airport when we land at midnight ready to check in at 05.30 for our flight to Estonia.

Next instalment from Talinn sometime after the 31st!

Hi Niamh and Cathal. This is Janet [my screen name]. Just read your profile page. It caught my eye 'cos me + a friend will be doing the exact same trip through E. Europe and then across Russia/Siberia/Mongolia/China on the Trans Mongolian train later this year. Go guys! Enjoy. I wish we could go now. Travel is the ONLY way to live and experience life but unfortunately we have to put on the brakes when working [to save for the next trip]. We are also from Southern Africa [Cape Town], so look forward to reading your upcoming journals. Have a blast and make sure to include loads + loads of hints + tips for the Russian to China section. Cheers Janet [+ David]

Hi Janet My first tip to you is to start organising your Russian Visas asap! I couldn't believe the queue on a cold morning in January. Russian people even have to get visas now too! Be very prepared for Russian bureacracy. All the advice we've had too is to get the visa stamped in each town asap - people have spent some of their trip at the local police station for not doing this. I don't know what you're using to plan the trip, but I've found a book called the Trans Siberian very useful. We're having a leaving party on Thursday and then blitzing our packing before going to Ireland to say goodbye to our families next Tuesday, so expect the next instalment to come from Estonia! Thanks for tagging us.
