Relaxation in a historical town
From Amelia Island 2006 in Amelia Island, United States on Jul 24 '06
Justin and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Amelia Island. We flew into Jacksonville, FL and rented a vehicle to drive to the island. It was just a quick 30-minute ride from the airport -- perfect!
The Ritz-Carlton met all of our expectations -- and more. The food was fabulous and the service outstanding. We especially appreciated the cold towels that were handed out at the poolside when it got really hot outside. I enjoyed sitting in the plush cushioned lounge chairs sipping margaritas and daiquiris each afternoon. Good thing I had saved up for tips!
If you like good food, Amelia Island will not disappoint.
When it got unbearably hot, we went downtown to the historic district. We enjoyed learning about the various countries that had occupied the island at one time or another. We toured the old courthouse, the museum, and Fort Clinch. Fort Clinch was an impressively preserved civil war fort on the edge of the island.
Our favorite thing to do when we travel is EAT! If you like good food, Amelia Island will not disappoint. Cafe 4750 at the Ritz is fabulous, albeit a little pricey. Our favorite place was 29 South Eats. Located inside an old home, it had an eclectic atmosphere and creative dishes. We started with the scallop appetizer. They were actually served inside the seashell. Marvelous! I had fish for dinner and then we had dessert...Oh my goodness. It was called "Doughnuts and Coffee." Served in a coffee mug, it was a doughnut bread pudding of sorts with expresso flavored cream on top. I think I scraped every ounce off the inside of the mug. If I hadn't been a southern girl with manners, then I would have picked it up and licked it. Enough said.
