Kibbutzism and Apples
From Mel's Middle Eastern Mumblings in Bar Am, Israel on Mar 04 '06
Unfortunately as there is only a half hour allotted to each volunteer every day, I do not have the luxury bestowed upon myself to write much.
In A Nutshell...
Made my way to Meron Junction as instructed, yesterday, only to arrive and realise it's some way-out-in-the-middle-of-nowhere place with no phone, and just a gas station and a couple of bus stops. I ended up having to borrow the phone in the gas station office to call the Volunteer Leader at Bar Am kibbutz 'Ahhh it is so sad...' Raviv (Volunteer Leader) says... before informing me that he can't collect me and I have to get the number 42 bus from Meron Junction there 'I think it comes in about half an hour' and consequently gave me directions to the wrong bus stop.
To cut a long an highly uninteresting story short... I concluded my tiring journey by hitching a lift with a most kind and hospitible young Israeli gentleman on his way to Tzfat (opposite direction) who spoke next to no English, but went out of his way to take me to Bar Am Kibbutz.
Most agreeable.
First impressions of this place say... Um.. Mountains, trees, very pretty. Isolated. Cold (compared to other parts of Israel I've been in). Started job at Apple Factory today - basically doing quality control checks on apples. If this continues I can see that I won't have much to write on my journal...
'I found 5 rotten apples today. There was another apple with a big dent in it, which I also had to throw away, but the quality overall was above average...'
Methinks it won't make too interesting reading.
Don't know how long I'll stick at this malarkey. Raviv didn't seem to impressed with my 'Maybe a month.. maybe longer. Not sure'
Maybe that's why he gave me the room that HAS BEDBUGS
(well, it's been sprayed, but I still don't trust it)
(I've had bad past experiences...)
Bonus was we got to listen to Hebrew 'rock' on the radio. Class.
Other volunteers seem a pretty nice and inoffensive bunch. Aussies, Kiwis, Saff Ahfrikans, Swedes (not the vegetable, sadly), Danes, 3 British lads from Essex!, Indians, Koreans... etc. etc. etc. Oh and a few Americans, too.
Splonge.
Mmm... food is nice. Yum yum yum. Oh and I don't have a roomie at the moment. That is a bad and a good thing. Bad in that anyone who knows me knows how unsociable I can be, and having a roomie would FORCE me to make an effort.
Sheesh, I'm tired. Toodle pip for now. Maybe I'll have something interesting to report in the future.
Maybe the next entry I'll have run away...
Who knows.
