Airport by the Sea
From Six months until I see home again... in Larnaca, Cyprus on Jan 23 '08
One of the most annoying things that can happen at an airport is to have a zipper break on your luggage... past loosing your ticket or passport or being selected for random screening.
My carry-on was a small zippered bag but the zipper was having problems even at home. British Airways has a rule that you are only allowed one carry-on for connecting flights out of London, so I took the smaller bag I had and put it in to go through security, however as I was zipping it up again, the one working zipper decided to break. This of course, had to be at the bottom of the bag, not the top.
So, I was a bit of a mess going through security and the rest of the airport in London because I had to keep trying to tape it shut with luggage tag stickers every few feet. Plus, then once we got on the plane I couldn't take anything out of it for fear of breaking the zipper even more. As it was, it was already half unzipped around the bottom. So it was a 6 hour flight without my books or computer. Luckily, I had scrabble and people to talk to.
Cyprus has very interesting landscape. The Mediterranean sea is a gorgeous turquoise blue and there are two sets of mountains on the island. The weather here is sunny 330 days a year or more so it is also very dry. There are many different types of trees from pine trees to palm trees, orange and lemon trees on every street corner and lots of other flowers and bushes.
The land has steep hills that are made of light colored rock where the trees grow out of the crevices and breaks in the formations, creating lines of tall green trees in rows up the hills. The bus ride from Larnaca to Nicosia is only about at 40 minute trip, even though it is about half way across the island.
It is a much more religious culture than those at home, the driver had a picture of Mary taped to the wall next to the door of the bus.
Maria gave us some information about what to expect while we were here, gave us our keys and told us we were meeting at 7pm at the school to go over some of much information to come about the culture, the island, the rules, the classes, and schedule that we will be going over on Sunday.
I'm glad for the free food, but I can't believe that we will be having Pizza Hut on our first night in Cyprus.
