We are on Strike!
From Our Trip in Athens, Greece on Jul 05 '07
After a rest at the hostel, we hopped on the train and made our way to the Olympic stadium. It was an incredible facility, we walked around some of the pools and also saw the athletics field and track. Still tired, we ate some supper and then went to bed early. We woke up on Saturday morning and made our way to the Acropolis. When we arrived, there were some camera crews there and all of the gates appeared to be closed. When we got up to the front there was a sign posted on the gates that said that the workers were on strike for two days, so we weren't able to visit that day. We walked back across town and went to the archaeological museum. It was quite interesting, especially the huge display of greek sculptures. The next day, we were on our way to the National Art Gallery and we saw some ancient ruins that looked really interesting. We found out that it was the temple of Olympia Zeus. It was an enormous structure, with 15 of the 109 original pillars still standing. We then walked to the National Art gallery and spent a couple hours walking around the exhibits there. There was a very good temporary exhibition featuring some European artists. The next day was our last in Athens and so we made our way to the Acropolis again as the strike was now over. The one catch was that there was two days of built up tourists waiting to go in. After standing in line waiting for the gate to open, we were herded up to see the famous temples. There was a lot of construction going on so it was not as impressive as we thought it would be. We walked around for a while waiting for some of the crowds to clear out, which didn't take all that long. Then we made our way down the hill from the Acropolis to the roman agora. There was another large temple there which was quite impressive. We spent the rest of the day sitting in a cafe and walking around the city. After getting our bags from the hostel storage, we hopped on the train and were on our way to the airport. After getting our tickets checked, we found out that we had purchased the wrong ticket, but the agent didn't do anything so we just got off the train and walked quickly into the terminal. After spending the night in the airport, we were on our way to Cyprus.
