Vang Vieng
From Southeast Asia Summer 2006 in Vang Vieng, Laos on Jul 23 '06
We woke up to the pouring rain and quickly ran across the road for some breakfast whilst we figured out what we wanted to do. By the time we finished eating, the rain had stopped, the clouds were moving and the sun quickly made an appearance. We walked around the town (1 road) and then decided to go Tubing. Tubing is a big attraction in Vang Vieng- you basically sit in a rubber ring and float down the river with bar and zip-line or swing stops for about 3 hours-very relaxing indeed! It was such good fun and we had beautiful sunshine- and Vang Vieng is amazingly beautiful. Chris decided to have some fun on the swings...and nearly died but he enjoyed it?! We ended up back in Vang Vieng at a bar overlooking the river, lying in hammocks, watching all the drunken people float down the river-including our Irish friends!
The next day we drove for about 1 and a half hours and then kayaked down the river to Vientiane. We stopped off for lunch which was cooked on a fire and served in a banana leaf as a plate! Chris nearly killed himself again jumping off a 12m high rock into the rapids. We were pushed out of our kayaks by our guides and floated down the river with our lifejackets, and finally managed to get our boats back. Then we drove for another hour with the psycho driver to Vientiane- the capital of Laos and found some food and a room for the night.
