Mainely Maine
From Maiden Voyage of the Pop Top in Acadia National Park, United States on Oct 20 '07
October 16, Monday
Yesterday we left Mom's after a wonderful week filled with visiting and talking with all the bros and sisses. Everyone wished we could all be together more often, but the New York contingent are all excited about getting together in Long Island for Billy and Monica's wedding on June 29,2008. Time will fly and we will all be together again. Can't wait.
We spent the night at Sturbridge MA in a private campsite called Outdoor World after finding the local State Park and learning that many of the parks are closed now for the winter. Outdoor world was very nice and because it is off season, very reasonable at $20 even less than all of our State Parks. There was a huge indoor pool, kayaks, a Kissing Bridge, and a Wishing Tree.
The color here is still mostly green. Celeste will be in town for the highlight of the color season in NY. The weather is starting to cool, but we are still quite comfortable in our cozy little camper. Today we toured the Atlantic coastline and a beautiful lighthouse, called the Nubble Light. Sharon, you would love it. I have taken photos.

Acadia National Park, near Bar Harbor Maine
What an amazing place. Fall colors are at their height and Bill and I are witnessing the Atlantic Ocean as I had never imagined it. I always pictured the Atlantic as a dark menacing sea spilling over a grim coastline. The reality at least for these past few days is a beautiful blue calm water gently flowing over light beige sandy beach, pink and green algae splashed granite rocks and pines and birches ringing the shores of coastal Maine. These shores don't seem vast like the Pacific Coast but are harbors and inlets and nearby islands ringing the coast so that it feels like rivers and lakes, not the ocean.
Everyone is raving about the glorious weather here these past few days. It has been warm during the day with a chill in the morning. Bright blue skies clash complimentary colors behind the oranges and yellows and bright red flourescent trees. The water is filled with lobster traps in bright colors and fishing boats scour the edges of the rocky shores searching for their catch.
People are more than friendly. Today we found an auto mechanic who was able to fix the hand crank for our camper roof for a pittance and a wave goodbye. Bill is filling up with lobster rolls to his hearts delight.
Acadia National Park is a beautiful place to visit and Maine is one of the most beautifull places we have visited. the Park is intersperced with private land, some of this was donated by the Rockefellers and other rich "cottage" owners who built their mansions here and granted the land to the US to preserve it. Bar Harbor is the town adjacent to the Park and is filled with quaint shops and touring opportunities.
