Delhi- Organized chaos

After about 2 months of rejuvenation in North America, we’re on the road again…this time in Delhi, India. There’s only one word to describe this place, CHAOS!
The sights, the sounds, smell, everything is so intense! We are very lucky to have found a wonderful apartment, a great alternative to hotel living. We’ve got a 3-bedroom/3-bath apartment near the city centre with wireless Internet…just one slight problem the landlord forgot to mention, there’s only hot water in the morning! At first I was ready to pack up and leave…but surprisingly because the water tanks are on the roof, the water that does come out is hot…there’s actually no need for hot water! We also have a servent ( for lack of a better word, as they are referred to here) named Milunn..he may the nicest little Indian man I have ever met!! He does all of our cooking, errands and secures our home. He actually lives in a room the size of a closet upstairs. Ryan and him have become best friends, they are quite a sight ….two dinks walking around! Milunn has to be all but 4 foot 5! We are lucky to have him around because whenever we need something he is there, although he speaks barely any English so when we describe stuff we resort to google and show him the picture of what we need! Today, Ry gave him is ipod to go to the store, the guy has not taken it off and has been listening to bob Marley all day….Ryan may be the nicest boss he’s ever had, he can’t stop smiling!

Staying in the apartment is great; A/C is on full force, blowing out every few hours, nonetheless. Here, we can eat/sleep and work with few problems…the hard part is venturing out. Anyone that knows me, knows I am terrified of dogs….well the minute you walk out of the front gate, they are everywhere. Stray dogs prowl the streets and nobody else seems to mind…this is my biggest problem with Delhi. Next to that, you can find anything from cows, goats and naked homeless children along the roadside. It’s totally bizarre being in a traffic jam with a cow, but it seems to be nothing out of the ordinary here! When it comes to traffic, it has a whole new meaning here…there is no such thing as a lane, everyone is honking constantly and trying to push through, you cannot get away from the noise.

Of course you can escape the noise if you go to some of the top hotels. Yesterday we visited a hotel that was ranked the top hotel in the world….now that was a sanctuary! It seemed as if you walked in and you were in another country…The Oberoi is stunning! The best restaurants can also be found in the hotels. We were invited out last night to a restaurant/lounge…it was beautiful, lavish inside, the music was amazing (similar to Buddha bar, but seemed so much more authentic being in India!) Apparently there was some big Bollywood actor there…but we had no idea who! Of course the restaurant did not come cheap, so for now, we’ll be happy with Milunn cooking us his specialties!
