Gospić suffered much during the Homeland War in Croatia. Being right on the Front Line, Gospić was heavily damaged but defied being "over-run" by invading JNA & rebel Serb forces of the "illegal" state; Republic of Serbian Krajina. Occupied positions directly to the east often bombarded the town & landmines are still very much a live danger today as can be seen by signposts when driving into town from the Freeway. Historically the township population was a mix of Serbs & Croats, much like all the "Military Frontiers" of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in Croatia. It is also the birthplace of Nikola Tesla (Smiljan 7 kms west of Gospić)

Gospić was an Ottoman Empire town and was first mentioned in its present name in 1604 most likely originating from the Croatian word for "Lady" - "Gospa"
Yummy Pećenje in Gospić!!
Today it is a stopping point off the Freeway in the beautiful Lika Region, or on the road to the Adriatic coast (Karlobag) before crossing Velebit National Park. We think it has the best "Pećenje" (Lamb Spit) and we often drive the 1.5hours it takes to get there just to enjoy the country atmosphere and the wonderful food.!!
