We slept in a little and decided to just do a walking tour of Munich on our own. There were a few walking tours that we got information on at the Tourist Office, but we wanted to see Munich at our own leisure. We got a day pass for the public transportation, which we could use for the S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams, and buses. The first place we went was the Konigsplatz or King's Square, where the Propylaen is located. It is a Greek style building with huge columns and marble work in the center of the square. Just passed the square were the Glyptothek and the Greek & Roman Museum, which had lots of Greek and Roman sculptures and artwork. Outside the museum was a replic of the Trojan Horse, which was used by the Greeks to defeat the Trojans and take Troy. We continued down the street to Karolinen Platz, where there was an Obelisk that looked much like the Washington monument except it was black and much smaller. We then walked to Marienplatz to see if we could find this store that our waitress at the Hofbrauhaus the night before had told us we could buy Leiderhosen and other Bavarian clothing. I got some Leiderhosen, a shirt, and socks. Each sock had two parts and upper part that just covers your calf and a lower part for your foot. I think it is so when you are dancing you can slap your ankle and make the loud slapping sound. Marcy got this really awesome Bavarian dress that she looks amazing in. We took the clothes back to the hotel and dropped them off. We then headed for the English Garden and took the U-bahn or the underground train to the University stop, which is right near the Garden. We walked through the Ludwig Maximilian's University and there were lots of students walking to and from classes. We stopped and got pictures of the Victory Arch, a monument in honor of the Bavarian Army. We then walked to the Chinese garden, which is a beer garden inside the English Garden. The name comes from the fact that there is a large Pagoda, Chinese tower, just near the beer garden. On our way we stopped at this big monument up on a hill with large white columns and a big dome on top. I think it was a monument to Ludwig Maximilian, since in the middle was a stone with his name on it and some German and it was in the shape of a castle from a chess board. We then went to the Chinese garden, found some seats, and relaxed with a beer and a giant pretzel. I guess giant pretzels are big at the beer gardens, since we keep seeing everyone getting them. We then tried heading for the big lake in the English Garden, but I got turned around and we headed the wrong direction. We ended up at the very south end of the English Garden. We did see something really cool, which was people surfing on rapids in the river where it comes into the park. We then walked all the way back up to the lake past the Chinese garden. It was really nice by the lake, so we sat and watched the swans and ducks on the lake just before dusk. We relaxed by the lake for a while and then headed back to Viktualienmarkt to eat dinner at this resturant that looked pretty good when we walked by it earlier in the day. It was a seafood resturant, so it was a good change from all the sausages and meatballs. We then walked back to the hotel and tried our new Bavarian clothes on. I really like the Leiderhosen and I hope I can find opportunities to wear it when I get home.
