Villa de Leyva - Zorro and a Big Plaza
From Buenos Knockers Señor Rooter in Villa de Leyla, Colombia on Mar 06 '07
Villa De Leyva is a small town three hours away from Bogota. Basically went here to get away from the city for a bit. Turned up and first thing we saw was Richie from Carnival wandering down the street so caught up with him and a couple of others he was traveling with before going for a wander around town.
One of the nicer towns in Colombia in my opinion, founded in the 1570's it looks like not much has changed since, paved streets and a huge central plaza which someone said is the biggest plaza in Colombia, the impression of size is helped by the fact the plaza is completely paved with a tiny little fountain in the middle and nothing else.
Due to it being such a well preserved colonial town it has been used for a few movies and is currently the site of filming for the wildly popular (I can't back that up) Spanish language soap opera version of the Zorro which we unfortunately (or fortunately if you are aware of the quality of Colombian soap operas) never got to see being filmed.
The studio has even gone as far as to paint all the buildings on the plaza from the usual white to varying shades of grey and green to aid in authenticity...will be interesting to see if they paint them back when filming is finished.
Only spent one night here so made the most of it by getting rip roaringly drunk in a small bar on the plaza..good times.
