Again I found myself in a rubber inner tube, floating down the river. This time our starting point was the village of San Jose Succutz, this is a small Mayan village before you reach Benque located on the River .The owner of Clarissa Falls resort organizes tubing tours from Succutz to Clarissa Falls. For $20 BZD he provides a ride to Succutz and the tube (with basic instructions on how to steer it!!) We were dropped off at the river amongst Mayan Women scrubbing their washing on the river banks, children splashing and other adults sitting in the river to take away the heat of the mid day sun. During the hot months here the river is a cool relief for many!

This tubing trip was slightly different to the last one I embarked upon, it involved rapids! There were about five sets of rapids, drop off and waterfalls, all as terrifying (to me) as each other, although the friend I was with thought they were all very timid and she didn't even let out a scream (unlike me!) Along the river between the rapids, you are able to spot many birds, reptiles, butterflies and dragonflies. Although my favorite part is lying back in the tube closing my eyes, feeling the sun on my face and listening to the river and the many birds in the trees on the river bank.

The final set of rapids, Clarissa Falls are a popular place to swim and where the Clarissa Falls Resort is based. After a couple of hours floating down the river a plate on their delicious enchiladas and a cold beer are most welcome! Another attraction at the resort is Romeo, the tame toucan who will fly down from the trees up to eight times a day and will sit on your arm and eat from a plate of fresh fruit, papaya is his favorite!
After this trip you could also take a 1 mile stroll into the village of Calla Creek, just down the road. Also there is a local craftsman that makes great bamboo furniture located close by. A taxi back and from San Ignacio town should cost anywhere between $10-15 each way
