Maria Island
From Trip Around Australia in Maria Island, Australia on Feb 22 '07
We passed several Echidnas on the roadside as we drove to Triabunna on the east coast. From here we ferried across to Maria Island with our bikes. M’s bike is too small and she still needs training wheels so she rode on my seat. Not the most comfortable arrangement for me. Maria Island, now a national park, started as yet another penal settlement but not as brutal as the others. We set off cycling and saw the Painted Cliffs and had lunch a 4 Mile Beach. Mountain bikes would have been better as it was hilly and the tracks unsealed. I eventually got a flat tyre and so M and I made the return trip on foot. We walked past many large grey Cape Barren Geese to some cliffs known to look for fossils.
