Bring good walking shoes, and don't cram your itinerary
Kyoto is the #1 tourist destination in Japan yet it doesn't have an airport. This is symptomatic of the city's transport, which is not as convenient as one would like. The subway system does not reach many of the farflung temples; it is crucial that you learn to ride the buses.
