What's that Skip? Steve is stuck in a fallen mine shaft?
From One and a half times around the world in Trentham, Australia on Jun 11 '06
Continuing my slightly unusual backpacking/family holiday, I went up to the country about 100km from Melbourne with my sister's future parents in law to visit their son and partner. I was told beforehand that there were lots of kangaroos there - hopping around the verandas, jumping up to you in a 'friendly' way - so I had high expectations of seeing some.
On the journey there we saw none, at the house we saw none, even walking through the forest we saw none! I was beginning to think the whole Skippy thing was a giant hoax concocted by Australians. Still, it was a really beautiful place and there were some interesting birds flying around. No one went into the mine shaft (the whole place is riddled with them), though it apparently wasn't that interesting inside.
We started back for Melbourne as it was getting dark - I'd given up searching at that stage - and then through the trees there are three of them just sitting there and a bit further down the road, two more trying to cause an accident! Still, it was too dark to take pictures of them, plus we were travelling at 100km/h so I'm still waiting for a real encounter...
