April 29th

Unfortunately we could only spend 1 day in Frankfurt. Because we are using this special weekend only travel ticket, we had to make sure that we bought the next one - to Munich - for travel on Sunday. Today was to be a quick whip around the city and what a beautiful city it is. We spent the morning arbing around. It's an interesting mix of old building/churches right next to modern stainless steel and glass of the CBD. We walked past Goethes birthplace, the 1400 century old city hall, medieval houses, the Dom, coronation site of the old German emperors, a functioning monastry right in the midst of the commercial centre, the old city gate and endless tall modern banks and offices. Tour took us about 2 hours.

Then back to the hostel to collect our packs to head off to Munich. Frankfurt station is really great. Modern, light with a glass roof. The train journey was interesting as we could see a definate change in countryside and style of building the further south and further towards Bavaria you go. More lush, richer colours, pretty and characterfuly villages. More hills and valleys with rivers flowing through. Beautiful. Travelling on a train is just the best way to see a country. Thank goodness we are not in a hurry to go anywhere and we're also totally flexible in our itinerary.
