Amsterdam has been one of our favourite cities so far. Its a beautiful, bustling city full of life and character.
We spent two nights in Amsterdam and purchased a 48 hour transport and museum pass on day 1. This allowed us a free access to a most of the main sights including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum. It was definitely worth it as it encouraged us to see some attractions we wouldn't normally go (note the Sex Museum is not included on this pass!).
As far as museums go, I really enjoyed the Rijksmuseum - the depth and detail of some of the Rembrandt paintings was incredible. Although the Van Gogh was a bit abstract for us.
The Red Light district was .... interesting. I have never seen anything like it. It's worth just sitting in a cafe/bar and watching some of the people go by:
- curious couples like Jessica and me wandering around
- loud, drunk Brits
- sifty looking characters
Its a strange transition from stunning art and picturesque canals to topless woman in windows and sex shows!
