This is not meant to be a Spanish lesson (because my language skills are very limited), but for years I have heard the English referring to the island as Majorca (with a hard J) and then learned that it should be Mallorca (with the ll sounding like a Y). So, you say

Ma·jor·ca   (m-jôrk, -ca)   and I say Mal·lor·ca (mä-yôrkä, -lyôr- ca)

....like Barcelona in miniature (Barcelona without the mugging )

An island of Spain in the western Mediterranean Sea off the east-central

coast of the mainland. The largest of the Balearic Islands, it was the center of an independent kingdom from 1276 until 1343. Tourism is its major industry.

However you pronounce it, this is a delightful island. Without putting too fine a point on it, this was the premiere destination for the British package holiday trade for decades and I (being influenced by others) thought of it as a dreadful place .. teeming with lager louts who were lobster red from baking their pale skins all day and drinking themselves into oblivion at night. There are still places were one can find this species (if you are into that), but when I first went there 5 years ago I was amazed to find a beautiful island of beaches. mountains. small towns and ... that clear light and beautiful blue sea that characterizes the Mediterranean.

Add to that, Palma .. a delightful city which is like Barcelona in miniature (Barcelona without the mugging .. to be clever), and you have all the makings of a great holiday destination.

It is possible (and easy) to travel to most places in the city or on the island by public transport (train or bus) and there is a wide variety of scenery and atmosphere.
